In more recent times, the Clinic has been using Prontosan RSolution [B Braun Australia] as a topical soak – applied to the wound base for at least 10minutes. The Solution is not intended to function as a wound cleanser. Its components are instead utilised for the purpose of down regulating inflammation within the wound base and to provide inhibition to the re-formation of surface biofilm. The Clinic’s wound cleansing protocol specifies that the lesion is first smothered with Perifoam R, which is given a 3-5min dwell-time. The site is then liberally washed and scrubbed with potable water and disposable Rediwipe R clothes [lint free]. The majority of the wound detritus is removed. This provides for better contact with the Prontosan R Solution soak and therefore amplifies its effect on the wound bed. The synergistic activity of both Perifoam R and Prontosan RSolution seems to demonstrate better outcomes than when these products are used in isolation.
