Woonona Nursing Home, Illawarra Retirement Trust
BACKGROUND:
A trial was conducted at Woonona Nursing Home using a new
product, called Peri-Foam. Peri-foam is a cleanser, moisturiser,
antiseptic, barrier and deodoriser.
AIM:
The aim was to establish the effectiveness of the product,
especially after episodes of urinary and faecal incontinence.
Cost comparisons were also recorded.
METHODOLOGY:

The trial was held for 32 days on one
level of the nursing home, where 40 residents reside.
Peri-foam was used after all incontinent episodes.

A control group of residents was also
used on another level of the home. These residents were
washed with soap and water and Lotion Silic was applied,
after incontinent episodes.

Comments from staff were documented.

The number of cans of Peri-foam and Silic
used were recorded.

Trial Group: 9 cans of
Peri-Foam were used. There were 30 residents who experienced
incontinent episodes and the cost per resident per day
was recorded.

Control Group: 10 containers
of Lotion Silic were used. There were 28 residents who
experienced incontinent episodes and the cost per resident
per day was recorded.

Cost Comparison: Peri-Foam
was 31% less expensive than Lotion Silic per resident
per day.
Comments and observations from staff regarding Peri-Foam:

Reduced number of excoriations

Immediate reduction of odour, especially
after Peri-foam used

Tea Tree/lemon smell lingers on residents
skin

Residents have commented on the nice smell
CONCLUSION:
Recommended the use of Peri-foam due to:

Effectiveness on enhancing residents care

Cost effective including laundry cost

Reduction of odours in the nursing home

Time saving for staff
None of the residents in this trial suffered
a reaction to Peri-foam.
